Who Wants To Read A List Of Strangers' Names?
There are two things that strike me about the popular
TV quiz show Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
Firstly, the programme is clearly named after the
song "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" yet nowhere
in the show is the song ever played.
You'd expect they'd use it as the theme tune, wouldn't
you, instead of writing something that sounds like
the news is about to start.
But the other thing that gets me is how at the end
of the show they show all the names of the people
who are going to be on the next show, and Chris
Tarrant reads them all out.
And I watch this as attentively as I have when the
questions come up!
Why am I so captivated by a list of names of people
I don't know or care about? Do I expect MY name
suddenly to appear on the board?
Of course not.
If I was going to appear on the next show, they'd
have already told me about it, wouldn't they?
